Well… We kicked off preseason November 2018 with the goal to improve on the 2018 season and win enough games to play finals football. Numbers were good throughout pre-season and escalated before our trial games in March.
Our recruiting team, headed by Josh Shepard, were on the ball early and some new and past players, which included Sam Fairclough, Rhys Woods, Dylan Olive, Matt Halsey, Zac Beekan, Matt Harper and Cohen Mattner, to name a few, had committed to play at the Den for 2019. There was a real buzz about The Den and with some big scalps early there become a belief that finals football could be a reality.
Injuries kicked in, but with plenty of depth we were able to cover these injuries and play consistent football and with the playing group buying into the game plan and taking ownership of it, and even modifying areas that needed work, we managed to end up 2 games clear as minor premiers. Losing our on field general (Rhys Woods) with an ACL , Matt Halsey broken hand, Karl Muller and then Sam Fairclough with a knee injury during finals didn’t help our cause, and that coupled with inaccurate goal kicking, we were unable to get to the big dance.
We came a long way in 2019 but with a disappointing finish. The boys, as well as coaching staff, are gutted, but have learnt a lot from playing finals and the experience of losing will put us in good stead when we next play finals.
Big congratulations to Sam Fairclough on winning the association B&F and Rhys Woods coming runner up, also Dylan Coates on winning the B grade association B&F. Looking forward to even a bigger and better year in 2020!
Regards Shaun Glacken
